Workplace
Our workplace is the world. And we ask the world of the 400,600 people who help us serve it, including drivers, loaders, planners, mechanics, analysts, IT specialists, service representatives and more. This is why we are highly selective in our hiring, and why we invest so much time and money in helping our people perform at a high level, day in and day out, around the world.
Last year, our total investment in training was more than US$325 million, with 24% of the total devoted to safety training. We also provided approximately US$24 million to employees who were enrolled in schools or colleges outside the workplace, and provided health benefits to more than 780,000 employees, retirees and their dependents.
Diversity is an integral part of our global strategy, just as it is part of the social fabric for a company operating in more than 200 countries and territories. In 2010, 31 percent of our officers and managers came from diverse backgrounds. To further demonstrate our commitment in all areas pertaining to human rights, in 2010, we adjusted our Code of Business Conduct, our Policy Book and other documents to more closely align with the language and principles of the United Nations Global Compact.
